SMS for insurers and insurance agents in Tanzania
Tanzanian insurers and agents use SMS to confirm a new cover note, remind motorists and bodaboda riders before cover lapses, and keep claimants informed between assessor visits. A short Kiswahili message with the vehicle registration and amount due is often all a customer needs to renew by mobile money. This page covers the flows, sample texts and the TIRA and data protection points to check.
What makes insurance messaging different in Tanzania
- Insurance is regulated by the Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) under the Insurance Act. TIRA's management information system records motor insurance stickers and their cover notes, and digital stickers have been used since April 2021.
- TIRA has been reported to let motorists verify a sticker and cover note online or by sending an SMS to 15200. Confirm the current format with TIRA before quoting it to customers, and point them to TIRA's own channels.
- Third-party motor cover is compulsory, which makes bodaboda and bajaji riders a large, price-sensitive group who renew in small amounts. A reminder a week before expiry, with a Lipa Namba, is often the difference between renewing and lapsing.
- Micro and health products sold through agents, banks and mobile networks are often paid monthly by mobile money, so every premium payment needs a receipt and every missed one a gentle prompt.
Messages insurance teams in Tanzania send
Cover note and policy confirmation
As soon as a policy is issued, send the cover period, cover note number and sticker number. Customers keep the SMS as quick proof of cover and it reduces calls asking whether the payment went through.
Motor renewal reminders
Send a reminder seven days and one day before expiry with the vehicle registration, renewal amount and how to pay. Bulk sends with per-customer merge fields let one upload cover your whole motor book.
Claim status updates
Confirm receipt of a claim with its number, then update the claimant when an assessor is booked, documents are missing, the claim is approved and payment is made. Fewer status calls frees your claims team.
Premium receipts and lapse warnings
For monthly micro and health products, acknowledge each premium and warn the customer if a payment is missed before the grace period ends. Keep medical details out of the text.
Agent and broker notices
Tell agents when commission is paid, when a product rate changes or when a policy they sold is about to lapse, so they can call the client before it does.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Only licensed insurers, brokers and agents may sell insurance, so every promotional message should name the licensed insurer. Check TIRA's market conduct requirements for how products and prices can be advertised.
- Health information is sensitive personal data under the PDPA. Do not put diagnoses, hospital names or claim reasons in an SMS, and collect written consent before you process health data for messaging.
- Cover confirmations, renewal reminders, claim updates and premium receipts are transactional. Cross-selling another product to an existing customer is promotional and needs consent and an opt-out.
- If you tell customers how to verify a sticker, send them to TIRA's official channels and do not imply that your message comes from TIRA.
- Insurers, brokers and agencies that hold customer data must be registered with the PDPC as data controllers.

Insurance SMS in Tanzania: common questions
Can customers check their motor cover by SMS?
TIRA has been reported to support checking a motor insurance sticker and its cover note online or by SMS to 15200, using the word STICKER and the sticker number. The format may have changed since that report, so confirm it on TIRA's website before including it in your messages. Your own confirmation SMS with the cover note and sticker numbers is still useful for customers.
Can we send renewal reminders to thousands of bodaboda riders at once?
Yes. Upload your motor book as CSV or Excel with each rider's number, registration, expiry date and amount, write one Kiswahili template with merge fields, and schedule it. Each rider gets their own figures. Use the API instead if your policy system can trigger reminders automatically on a set number of days before expiry.
Can our agents send messages under the insurer's sender ID?
They can, if you give them sub-accounts with roles and approvals, so promotional campaigns are checked before they go out and every send is logged. That keeps the brand consistent and gives you an audit trail. Agents running their own sender IDs need to register them separately with each network.
What should a claim SMS never contain?
Leave out medical details, the cause of a loss, third-party names and bank account numbers. A claim number, the next step and a contact number are enough. Shared phones are common, and an SMS preview can be read by anyone holding the handset, so assume someone other than the policyholder may see it.
