SMS for insurers and brokers in Uganda
Insurance in Uganda is often bought through an agent, a bank or a mobile money menu, and the customer may never see a printed policy. A clear SMS confirming cover, reminding them of a premium or updating a claim is how many policyholders know they are protected. eSMS Africa delivers those messages to MTN and Airtel.
What makes insurance messaging different in Uganda
- The Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA) licenses insurers, takaful operators, brokers, agents, bancassurance agents, loss assessors and health maintenance organisations.
- IRA has published micro-insurance guidelines, and low-premium products sold with mobile money or through SACCOs need low-cost, high-reach communication: SMS fits that model.
- Policyholders can lodge complaints with IRA through its online complaints portal, so clear written confirmations of what was agreed reduce disputes before they start.
- Motor third-party, medical and funeral covers are often renewed monthly or annually, which makes reminder timing the main lever for keeping policies in force.
Messages insurance teams in Uganda send
Policy confirmation
Send the policy number, cover type, start date and premium as soon as a policy is issued, especially when it was sold by an agent or through a mobile money menu with no paperwork.
Premium due and lapse warnings
Remind the policyholder a week before the premium is due, then send a final notice before the grace period ends, with the exact amount and how to pay by MoMo or Airtel Money.
Claim status updates
Tell claimants when documents are received, when a loss assessor is assigned and when payment is approved, instead of leaving them to call the branch for news.
Medical cover hospital visits
For HMO and medical schemes, confirm pre-authorisations to the member after a hospital visit so they know what was approved and can query anything unexpected.
Renewal invitations
Invite existing policyholders to renew motor or household cover a few weeks before expiry. Because it markets a new policy term, treat it as commercial and include an opt-out.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- IRA licenses every insurer, broker and agent that will appear in your messages. Make sure product names and terms in an SMS match what was filed and sold, since IRA handles policyholder complaints.
- Medical cover messages involve health data, which the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019 treats as sensitive. Keep diagnoses and treatment details out of SMS; say a pre-authorisation was approved, not what it was for.
- Renewal offers and cross-sell messages are commercial. The UCC 2019 regulations require consent or a recent prior relationship, an organisation name in the message, a free STOP opt-out and delivery outside 19:00 to 06:00.
- Bancassurance partners must not hand their customer lists to the insurer for marketing without consent, which is a data protection issue as well as a UCC one.

Insurance SMS in Uganda: common questions
Is an SMS valid proof of insurance cover?
An SMS confirmation is a useful record for the customer, but the legal proof is the policy and, for motor cover, the documents the law requires. Use the SMS to confirm key details and point to where the full policy can be viewed or collected.
Can we remind customers about premiums after 7pm?
Premium reminders for an existing policy are closer to service messages than marketing, but customers react badly to late messages about money. Schedule reminders in the morning or early afternoon; reserve evening sends for urgent items such as a claim payment.
How do agents in the field trigger messages?
If your agents use a policy app or web portal, it can call the eSMS API when a policy is issued. Smaller brokers can upload a daily CSV to the dashboard and send templated confirmations with merge fields for each policy number.
