SMS for SACCOS, banks and microfinance in Tanzania
Tanzanian SACCOS and banks use SMS to confirm every contribution, remind borrowers before an instalment falls due and call members to the annual general meeting. Messages arrive in Kiswahili on Vodacom, Airtel, Yas and Halotel, on any phone, so members in Kahama get the same receipt as members in Kariakoo. Below are message flows, sample texts and the TCDC and BoT rules that shape them.
What makes banking & saccos messaging different in Tanzania
- Tanzania had 981 licensed SACCOS at the end of 2025, serving about 1.9 million members, and members themselves provide more than 92% of SACCOS funding, so a clear receipt for every contribution is what builds trust (Daily News).
- SACCOS sit in Tier 3 under the Microfinance Act 2018 and are inspected and supervised by the Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission (Tume ya Maendeleo ya Ushirika), while banks and Tier 2 lenders answer directly to the Bank of Tanzania.
- Members pay hisa, akiba and loan repayments through M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas, Airtel Money, HaloPesa or a bank agent. The wallet sends its own receipt, but members still want proof that the SACCOS has posted the money to their account.
- Many SACCOS are built around a workplace, such as teachers, health workers or a municipal council, with salary check-off deductions. A monthly SMS confirming the deduction and new balance answers the most common question at the office counter.
- Loans are usually backed by member guarantors (wadhamini). Guarantors are exposed if a borrower defaults, so a carefully worded early-warning SMS is a fair way to keep them informed.
Messages banking & saccos teams in Tanzania send
Contribution and share receipts
When your SACCOS software posts a contribution, send the member the amount, date and new savings balance in Kiswahili. This closes the gap between the mobile money receipt and the SACCOS ledger, and cuts calls asking whether a payment has been recorded.
Loan instalment reminders
Schedule a reminder three days before each due date and a second one on the day, with the amount and the paybill or Lipa Namba and reference to use. Members on salary check-off get a confirmation instead of a reminder.
Guarantor notices
If a repayment is a week late, tell each guarantor that the loan they backed is in arrears and who to contact, without exposing the borrower's full balance. Send it only after the borrower has had their own reminder.
AGM, elections and dividends
Send the date, venue and agenda link for the mkutano mkuu, a reminder the day before, and the dividend (gawio) rate once members approve it. One message reaches members who missed the notice board.
Bank transaction and security alerts
Banks and microfinance lenders send debit and credit alerts, new-device login warnings and card blocks. Each alert can show the fee charged, which supports the fee disclosure duty in the 2025 consumer protection amendments.

- SACCOS are supervised by TCDC under the Microfinance Act 2018 and the Cooperative Societies Act. Follow your by-laws on how members are notified of meetings and elections, and keep a record of notices sent.
- Banks and other providers licensed by the Bank of Tanzania must disclose all fees and charges before a customer makes an electronic transaction, and obtain prior consent before using customer information for promotional offers (GN 298 of 2025).
- Financial transaction data counts as sensitive personal data under the Personal Data Protection Act, which requires prior written consent to process it. Capture SMS consent on the membership or account-opening form.
- Balance alerts, receipts and loan reminders are transactional. Messages selling a new loan product or insurance add-on are promotional and need consent and a working opt-out.
- Guarantor messages go to a third party, so share only what they need: that a loan is in arrears and who to call. Never send a borrower's full statement to anyone else.

Banking & SACCOS SMS in Tanzania: common questions
Can our SACCOS software send receipts automatically?
Yes. If your SACCOS system can call a web address when a contribution is posted, it can call the eSMS Africa API with the member's number, amount and balance, and the receipt goes out within the same process. If it cannot, export the day's postings to Excel and upload them to the dashboard, where merge fields fill in each member's figures.
Should SACCOS messages be in Kiswahili or English?
Most member-facing SACCOS messages work best in Kiswahili, because that is what members speak at meetings and what older members read most comfortably. Workplace SACCOS for professionals sometimes prefer English. Kiswahili uses the standard GSM alphabet, so it costs the same per 160-character segment as English, and you can keep one template in each language.
Is it acceptable to SMS guarantors about a late loan?
Guarantors have a direct interest in the loan, and most SACCOS by-laws let the society contact them when a borrower is in arrears. Keep the message factual, send it only after the borrower has been reminded, and do not include the full balance or personal details. Check your by-laws and loan agreement wording, and get advice from TCDC if you are unsure.
Does a SACCOS need to register with the PDPC?
The Personal Data Protection Act requires anyone who collects or processes personal data to register with the Personal Data Protection Commission, and a SACCOS holds members' names, phone numbers and financial records. Registration was due by 30 April 2025 for existing organisations. Confirm your status with the PDPC; eSMS Africa acts as your processor for the messages you send.
