SMS for insurers, brokers and HMOs in Nigeria
A NAICOM circular of October 2025 told insurers not to incept cover until policyholders submit their NIN and BVN, which turned KYC collection into a messaging job. eSMS Africa helps Nigerian insurers and brokers chase missing details, confirm activation, remind customers before renewal and keep claimants informed, without sending identity numbers over SMS.
What makes insurance messaging different in Nigeria
- NAICOM's circular of 22 October 2025, citing section 64(4) of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025, says insurers and brokers shall not provide or incept cover without the policyholder's NIN and BVN, or standardised CAC documents for corporate clients (Leadership).
- Existing policies without these details were to be updated by 31 December 2025, and underwriters were told to contact affected policyholders directly or through intermediaries and to run customer awareness campaigns. SMS is the cheapest way to reach every policyholder on file.
- Group life cover needs a schedule listing each employee's name, date of birth, BVN and NIN before cover starts, so HR teams and brokers often need staff-wide reminders with a secure upload link.
- Premiums are paid by bank transfer, card, USSD and through agents, and many retail policies (motor, device, micro-health) renew monthly or yearly. Missing a renewal is the most common reason cover lapses.
Messages insurance teams in Nigeria send
KYC completion reminders
Send policyholders a link to a secure form where they enter their NIN and BVN, then a follow-up a week later to anyone who has not completed it. Never ask people to reply with identity numbers by SMS.
Policy activation confirmation
Once KYC checks pass and the premium is received, confirm the policy number, cover start date and where to download the certificate. This tells the customer cover is live, which matters for motor and travel policies.
Premium and renewal reminders
Remind customers 14 days and 3 days before renewal with the premium due and the account or USSD code to pay. After payment, send a receipt with the new expiry date.
Claim status updates
Notify claimants when a claim is registered, when an assessor is assigned, when documents are missing and when payment is approved. Each update cuts calls to the claims desk.
Employer group schedules
Send HR contacts a reminder to upload the staff schedule with NIN and BVN columns before a group life policy renews, with a contact at the broker for questions.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Insurers and brokers are regulated by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM). Follow its October 2025 KYC circular and collect NIN and BVN through a secure channel, not by SMS reply.
- Policy, premium, renewal and claim notices about a customer's own cover are transactional. Offers for new policies or riders are promotions in NCC DND category 1 (banking, insurance and finance).
- NIN, BVN and health details used for underwriting are personal data under the NDPA 2023. Keep them out of message text and logs, and include only a policy number or masked reference.
- When marketing to existing policyholders, honour any section 36 NDPA objection and suppress the number across every sender ID and agent list.

Insurance SMS in Nigeria: common questions
Can policyholders send their NIN or BVN to us by SMS?
You should not ask them to. SMS is not encrypted end to end, numbers are stored in carrier and provider logs, and fraudsters copy insurer messages to harvest identity numbers. Send a link to a secure form on your own domain and state in every message that you will never ask for these numbers by SMS.
Is a KYC reminder promotional?
No. A reminder that a customer's own policy needs NIN and BVN to stay active is a service message about an existing contract, so it can go on the transactional route. Keep it free of offers; if you add a cross-sell line, the whole message becomes promotional and DND rules apply.
How do brokers send on behalf of several insurers?
Use one sender ID per brand that the customer recognises. A broker can register its own sender ID and name the insurer in the text, or register an ID for each insurer with a letter of authorisation from that insurer. Team roles and campaign approvals in the dashboard keep each insurer's lists separate.
