SMS for couriers, delivery and logistics in Tanzania
Tanzanian couriers, parcel offices and delivery businesses use SMS to send collection codes, tell recipients when a rider is close and keep importers updated as cargo leaves Dar es Salaam port. Recipients do not need an app or data bundle to receive the update, which is why SMS is still the default for parcel notices across the country.
What makes logistics, courier & transport messaging different in Tanzania
- Parcels between regions often travel on intercity buses or courier networks and are collected at an office in towns such as Mwanza, Mbeya or Arusha. A collection code by SMS lets the office check that the right person is collecting.
- In Dar es Salaam, last-mile delivery runs largely on bodaboda and bajaji riders. Many addresses still rely on landmarks, so a message with the rider's number before arrival saves failed trips.
- The national Anwani za Makazi programme is adding street names and house numbers, but recipients rarely know their new address yet. Ask for a landmark and confirm by phone.
- Dar es Salaam port handles transit cargo for Zambia, Malawi, the DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda, and importers and clearing agents want release and dispatch updates without chasing them by phone.
Messages logistics, courier & transport teams in Tanzania send
Collection codes at parcel offices
When a parcel arrives at a branch, send the recipient a one-time collection code, the branch and opening hours. Staff release the parcel only against the code and an ID.
Rider on the way
Send the rider's name, phone number and delivery window when the order leaves, plus the cash-on-delivery amount if any, so the recipient has the money ready.
Failed delivery and rescheduling
If nobody answers, send a message with a link or number to choose a new time. Two-way numbers can accept a reply with a preferred day.
Cargo release and transit updates
Clearing and forwarding agents can update importers when a container is released, loaded and crosses a border point such as Tunduma, using reference numbers from their own system.
Driver and rider dispatch
Send pick-up details, loading times and route changes to drivers and riders in Kiswahili, so dispatchers spend less time on calls and every driver has the instruction in writing.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Courier and postal operators are licensed by TCRA. Check your licence conditions for customer notification and complaint handling requirements.
- Recipients did not give you their number themselves; the sender did. Use it for delivery messages only, and do not add recipients to marketing lists without their own consent.
- Where you deliver for online shops, you are processing their customers' data. Agree in writing what you may do with it, as the PDPA expects of data processors.
- Collection codes work like one-time passwords. Make them single-use, expire them after collection, and never print them on the parcel label.
- Keep full addresses and parcel contents out of SMS. The tracking number, code and branch are enough.

Logistics, courier & transport SMS in Tanzania: common questions
Can we send delivery SMS from our dispatch system automatically?
Yes. Call the eSMS Africa API at each status change, such as dispatched, arrived at branch, out for delivery and delivered, with the tracking number in the text. Delivery reports come back by webhook, so your system can flag numbers that never received the message and ask the shipper for a better contact.
What if the recipient's number is wrong?
Delivery reports will show the message as undelivered, usually within minutes. Flag the parcel, contact the sender for a corrected number, and keep the parcel at the branch. Do not try other numbers found elsewhere, as that can expose a stranger to the recipient's details.
Can recipients reply to choose a delivery time?
Replies need a two-way number rather than a one-way sender ID. Two-way numbers in Tanzania are available on request. Until you have one, send a short link to a rescheduling page or a phone number to call, which works on any phone.
Should messages to drivers be in Kiswahili?
For most riders and drivers, yes. Kiswahili dispatch messages are easier to read quickly on the road and leave less room for misunderstanding. Keep them short, put the pick-up point and time first, include the vehicle or order number, and add a dispatcher's number for questions.
