SMS for utilities, solar providers and ISPs in Tanzania
Tanzanian water utilities, solar and mini-grid companies, property managers and internet providers use SMS to send prepaid tokens, monthly bills, outage notices and technician visit times. Customers often top up electricity or pay bills by mobile money, and an SMS is the receipt they check when the meter or router does not respond.
What makes utilities, isps & solar messaging different in Tanzania
- Electricity customers on TANESCO's LUKU prepaid meters buy tokens by mobile money and receive a 20-digit token to enter on the meter. Landlords, estate managers and mini-grid operators who resell power need the same kind of token message.
- Energy and water utilities are regulated by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA). Public water utilities bill monthly and are paid against a GePG control number.
- Solar home system companies sell on pay-as-you-go plans, and each mobile money payment adds more days of power, usually with a code or confirmation sent by SMS.
- Fibre and wireless internet providers, licensed by TCRA, are expanding in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Dodoma and Mwanza, and customers expect warnings before planned maintenance.
Messages utilities, isps & solar teams in Tanzania send
Prepaid tokens and activation codes
Send the token or activation code within seconds of payment, with the units or days purchased and the meter or device number, so customers can enter it straight away.
Monthly bills with control numbers
Send the billing period, amount, control number and due date. Follow up a few days before the deadline only for customers who have not yet paid.
Planned maintenance and outages
Warn affected customers about planned work with the area, date and expected hours, and send an all-clear when service returns. Unplanned outages get a short acknowledgement so call centres are not flooded.
Installation and technician visits
Confirm installation appointments with a time window and the technician's name, and offer a link to reschedule if the customer will not be home, which saves wasted trips across the city.
Low balance and renewal reminders
Remind pay-as-you-go and internet customers before credit runs out or a package expires, with the amount and mobile money details to renew, so service continues without a gap or a support call.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- EWURA regulates electricity and water services, including how customers are billed and notified before disconnection. Check your licence conditions and EWURA's consumer rules before automating disconnection notices.
- Internet and telecom providers are licensed by TCRA and must follow its consumer protection rules on service information and complaints.
- Tokens, bills, outage notices and technician visits are transactional. Package upgrades and promotions are promotional and need consent and an opt-out.
- Treat tokens and activation codes like money: send them only to the number registered on the account, and log every resend.

Utilities, ISPs & solar SMS in Tanzania: common questions
How quickly can a token SMS go out after payment?
As soon as your payment system confirms the mobile money transaction and calls the eSMS Africa API, the message is submitted to the network. Delivery reports show when it reached the handset. Make the token easy to read by placing it on its own, with spaces between groups of digits if your meters accept that format.
Can we send outage alerts only to one area?
Yes. Tag customers by area, feeder, tower or estate when you import them, then send only to that segment so customers elsewhere are not alarmed. For large unplanned outages, a short first message and a follow-up when service returns usually work better than frequent updates.
Can customers request a token resend by SMS?
With a two-way number, available in Tanzania on request, customers can text a keyword and their meter number, and your system can resend the last token to the registered number. Check the request against the account first so tokens cannot be sent to a stranger.
Should disconnection warnings be sent by SMS?
SMS is a practical way to warn customers before disconnection, but check what EWURA and your licence require as formal notice, which may need more than one channel or a set notice period. Include the amount, deadline and how to pay, and avoid threatening language.
