SMS for AMCOS, cooperatives and agribusiness in Tanzania
Agricultural marketing cooperatives (AMCOS), cooperative unions and agribusinesses in Tanzania use SMS to tell farmers when to bring their crop, what they were paid after an auction and when inputs have arrived. A short Kiswahili text reaches farmers on basic phones in villages where meetings and notice boards are slow, and it leaves a written record of every payment.
What makes agriculture & amcos messaging different in Tanzania
- AMCOS are registered and supervised as cooperative societies by the Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission, and they collect crops such as cashew, coffee, cotton, tobacco and sesame from their members.
- Crops sold through the warehouse receipt system and Tanzania Mercantile Exchange auctions are paid after the sale. Farmers wait for news of the price and the payment, so a clear SMS reduces rumours and visits to the AMCOS office.
- Payments to farmers increasingly go to bank accounts or mobile money wallets. An SMS showing kilograms, price per kilo and total helps farmers check what they received.
- Each crop has its own season and marketing rules set with its crop board, so message calendars differ: a cashew AMCOS in the south is busiest late in the year, a coffee society in Kilimanjaro at a different time.
Messages agriculture & amcos teams in Tanzania send
Collection day notices
Tell members which day and which warehouse will receive their crop, and what quality the buyer expects. A reminder the evening before helps farmers plan transport.
Auction and payment statements
After each auction, send each farmer the kilograms sold, price per kilo and total paid, with a number to call if the figures look wrong.
Input arrivals
Let members know when fertiliser, seed or pesticides have arrived, how many bags each member is allocated and the collection dates, so nobody travels to the warehouse before stock is there.
Extension and weather tips
Share short, practical tips approved by an extension officer on drying, sorting and storage, and relay official weather warnings from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority to members who asked for them.
Meetings and elections
Send notices for general meetings, board elections and dividend announcements, so members who live far from the office or the village notice board do not miss a vote that affects their crop payments.

- AMCOS and cooperative unions are governed by the Cooperative Societies Act and supervised by TCDC. Follow your by-laws on how members must be notified of meetings, elections and payments.
- Crop boards set marketing rules for their crops, and buying and selling arrangements change between seasons. Check with the relevant board before announcing prices or auction dates.
- Payment statements show a member's financial transactions, which is sensitive personal data under the PDPA. Collect written consent at registration and send statements only to the member's own number.
- Messages from input suppliers or buyers advertising products are promotional and need the farmer's consent. Do not hand the AMCOS member list to third parties.

Agriculture & AMCOS SMS in Tanzania: common questions
Many members have basic phones. Will SMS reach them?
Yes. SMS works on every handset, including basic feature phones, and does not need data or an app. Keep messages in plain Kiswahili without emojis, put the key figure or date first, and avoid links for members who cannot open them. For members without their own phone, ask whose number to use and record it.
How do we send each farmer their own payment figures?
Export the auction or payment sheet from your system or Excel with columns for phone number, kilograms, price and total. Upload it to the eSMS dashboard, write one Kiswahili template with merge fields, check a preview, then send or schedule. Each farmer receives only their own figures.
Can a cooperative union message members of all its AMCOS?
A union can run one account with a separate sender ID or sub-account per AMCOS, so members see a name they recognise. Make sure each AMCOS has agreed to share its member list with the union for this purpose, and keep the lists up to date as members join and leave.
Can farmers reply to ask questions?
Replies need a two-way number, which is available in Tanzania on request. With one, farmers can reply with a question or a keyword such as BEI for the latest price, and replies arrive in your dashboard or system by webhook.
