Choosing an SMS provider for Africa

Side-by-side comparisons built only from what each company publishes, with a source on every claim about the other provider, and an honest note on when they may suit you better.

What to check when you compare SMS providers in Africa

  1. Published per-country prices. Can you see the rate for each country and tier before you sign up? Do failed messages or sender IDs cost extra?
  2. Sender ID handling. Who registers your brand with each network, how long it takes, and what it costs. Rules differ by market: see our sender ID guides.
  3. Transactional vs promotional routing. In Nigeria OTPs must use the transactional route to reach DND numbers; in Kenya Safaricom separates promotional and transactional sender IDs.
  4. Delivery reports. Real handset receipts by webhook, per message, so you can measure delivery yourself.
  5. Two-way options. Short codes or numbers for replies and STOP opt-outs, which several regulators expect.
  6. Local payment. Mobile money, local currency display and pay-as-you-go without minimums.
  7. Interfaces. REST API, SMPP for high volume, and documented OTP flows.

See how this plays out by country and industry in our use-case guides.
