SMS for schools and universities in Uganda
Parents in Uganda pay fees through SchoolPay codes, banks and mobile money, often from a different town from the boarding school. A short SMS with the balance, the payment code and the deadline is the message they act on. eSMS Africa lets bursars send fee reminders, visiting day notices and term dates to every parent at once.
What makes schools & universities messaging different in Uganda
- SchoolPay gives each student a 10-digit payment code that parents use at more than 10 banks and microfinance institutions or through MTN MoMo (*165#) and Airtel Money (*185#). Quoting that code in your SMS removes the commonest payment error.
- UNEB results reach candidates through its web portal or by SMS: candidates send their index number to 6600. Schools then follow up with their own messages about collection, admissions and next steps.
- Many secondary schools are boarding schools, so visiting days, term opening and closing dates and transport arrangements are the messages parents most need on time.
- Universities and tertiary institutions message students directly about registration deadlines, tuition balances and examination timetables, since students often change email addresses but keep the same phone number.
Messages schools & universities teams in Uganda send
Fee balance reminders
Export balances from your school management system and send each parent their child's outstanding amount, SchoolPay code and deadline with merge fields, instead of one generic reminder.
Term dates and visiting days
Announce reporting dates, visiting days and closing dates at the start of term, then remind parents a few days before each one so they can plan travel and shopping.
Results and report cards
Tell parents when report cards or mock results are ready and how to collect them, or share a short summary where your policy allows it.
Urgent notices
Alert parents quickly to an early closure, a sick child or a transport change. Health and security alerts are exempt from the UCC night-time limit.
University registration deadlines
Remind students of registration, tuition and exam card deadlines, and confirm when a bank or mobile money payment has been matched to their student number.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Children's personal data needs parental consent under the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019. Collect parents' numbers and consent at admission, and message parents rather than pupils under 18.
- Fee reminders and school notices to parents of enrolled pupils are service messages. Advertising holiday coaching or a new branch to the wider public is commercial and needs consent and a STOP opt-out.
- Regulation 19 of the UCC 2019 regulations exempts health, fire and security emergency alerts from the 19:00 to 06:00 limit, so a school can warn parents of an emergency at night.
- Keep messages factual. Do not name a pupil's discipline issue or medical condition in an SMS that may be read on a shared phone.

Schools & universities SMS in Uganda: common questions
Can we send each parent a different fee balance?
Yes. Upload a CSV or Excel file with columns for phone, child's name, balance and SchoolPay code, write one template with merge fields, and each parent receives their own figures. Developers can do the same through the send-bulk API with a vars object per recipient.
How do parents check UNEB results by SMS?
UNEB runs its own results service: candidates send their index number to 6600 or use the UNEB web portal. Schools do not need to resend national results, but many follow up with their own message to parents about collecting result slips, A-level or next-term admissions and reporting dates.
Which sender ID should a school use?
Use a short form of the school name that parents recognise, up to 11 characters, such as HILLSIDESS. Register it with MTN and Airtel through eSMS Africa; you can send from the eSMS default sender while it is approved by both networks.
