SMS for clinics, hospitals and pharmacies in Uganda
Missed appointments and uncollected results cost Ugandan clinics time and patients their health. An SMS the day before an antenatal visit, or a note that lab results are ready, works on the basic phones many patients carry. eSMS Africa sends these reminders to MTN and Airtel numbers while keeping clinical detail out of the message.
What makes clinics, hospitals & pharmacies messaging different in Uganda
- Health data is special personal data under the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019, so the message itself should reveal as little as possible: a time and a place, not a test name or a diagnosis.
- Government health campaigns, such as immunisation reminders, are run by the Ministry of Health, often through the NITA-U government SMS gateway. Private clinics, faith-based hospitals and pharmacies send their own.
- Many patients travel from outside Kampala to referral facilities, so a reminder that arrives the day before gives them time to arrange transport and money.
- Shared family phones are common in Ugandan households. Write every health message as if a spouse, parent or neighbour, rather than the patient, will read it first.
Messages clinics, hospitals & pharmacies teams in Uganda send
Appointment reminders
Send a reminder 24 hours before each booking with the date, time, clinic and a number to reschedule, so the slot can be given to someone else if the patient cannot come.
Results ready to collect
Tell the patient their results are ready at the facility, without naming the test. They come back for the conversation with a clinician rather than reading a result alone.
Refill and follow-up prompts
Pharmacies and chronic-care clinics can prompt patients a few days before a prescription runs out, so they can plan the trip and money and avoid gaps in treatment for long-term conditions.
Antenatal and immunisation schedules
Private maternity clinics can schedule a series of visit reminders from the expected due date, and child immunisation reminders after birth, with consent at registration.
Bill and insurance notices
Confirm deposits paid, outstanding balances and what an insurer or medical scheme covered, so families can raise the money in time and are not surprised at discharge.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Treat every message as visible to others: no diagnoses, HIV status, test names or medication names in the SMS body. Health data is special personal data under the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019.
- Get consent to SMS reminders at registration and record it. Patients who opt out must be removed within 24 hours under regulation 12 of the UCC 2019 regulations if the messages are commercial, and it is good practice for reminders too.
- Regulation 19's night-time limit does not apply to messages alerting to a health emergency, but routine appointment reminders should still go in the daytime.
- Register your facility with the PDPO as a data controller and limit dashboard access to staff who need patient numbers.

Clinics, hospitals & pharmacies SMS in Uganda: common questions
Can we send test results by SMS?
We recommend against putting the result itself in an SMS. Phones are shared and messages are stored on the handset. Tell the patient results are ready and invite them to collect them or speak to a clinician, which also gives you a chance to counsel them.
How far ahead should appointment reminders go out?
The day before works for most clinics, with a same-morning reminder for early slots. Patients travelling from upcountry to a Kampala hospital may need two or three days' notice to arrange transport and money, so set the reminder schedule by service rather than using one rule.
Can our hospital system send reminders automatically?
Yes. If your patient management system can export appointments or call a web address, it can send reminders through the eSMS API or the bulk endpoint with merge fields for name, date and time. Smaller clinics can upload a daily CSV in the dashboard and schedule the send.
