SMS for couriers and delivery services in Uganda
In Kampala a delivery often depends on a landmark, a phone call and a boda rider who knows the area. SMS gives the receiver the rider's name, an expected time and a code to hand over, which cuts failed deliveries and disputes. eSMS Africa sends those updates from your dispatch system to MTN and Airtel.
What makes logistics, couriers & boda delivery messaging different in Uganda
- Street addressing is limited outside central areas, so deliveries rely on landmarks and phone calls. An SMS with the rider's number lets the receiver call ahead with directions.
- Upcountry parcels often travel on buses and coaches to a parcel desk, and the receiver must collect them in person with an ID and a reference.
- Cash on delivery is common, so a code that the receiver gives the rider only after paying protects both the merchant and the rider.
- Cross-border freight from Mombasa through Malaba and Busia moves on to Kampala, where importers and clearing agents need status updates as consignments clear.
Messages logistics, couriers & boda delivery teams in Uganda send
Dispatch notice
Tell the receiver the parcel has left the warehouse, which rider or vehicle has it and the expected delivery window, with a number to call.
Delivery code
Send a one-time delivery code to the receiver. The rider enters it in your app at handover, giving you proof of delivery without paper signatures.
Bus parcel arrival
When a parcel reaches an upcountry office, SMS the receiver the collection point, opening hours and reference, and remind them if it is not collected.
Failed delivery rescheduling
If no one is home, send a message with a link or number to pick a new slot, rather than relying on repeated calls from the rider.
Freight clearance updates
Clearing agents can update importers as a container is released at the port, crosses the border at Malaba or Busia and arrives at the inland depot, cutting status calls.

Compliance for logistics, couriers & boda delivery SMS in Uganda
A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Delivery updates the receiver expects are service messages and can be sent when the event happens. Do not add marketing to them; a promotion turns the whole message commercial.
- Receiver names, phone numbers and addresses are personal data under the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019. Share them with riders only through your app and only for the delivery.
- If you market your courier service to new businesses by SMS, you need consent or a recent prior relationship, an opt-out and daytime timing under the UCC 2019 regulations.
- Keep logs of what was sent and when (regulation 15). They double as evidence in delivery disputes.

Logistics, couriers & boda delivery SMS in Uganda: common questions
Can riders send SMS from their own phones instead?
They can, but customers then get messages from random numbers they do not trust, and you have no record of what was promised. Sending from your registered sender ID through the API gives a consistent brand and a delivery report for every message.
How do delivery codes reduce fraud?
The code is sent only to the receiver's phone. The rider cannot complete the delivery in the app without it, so a parcel marked delivered has proof that the receiver was present. It also protects riders against false claims of non-delivery.
Can we track whether the SMS was delivered?
Yes. Every message returns an ID, and delivery reports arrive by webhook and in the dashboard. Your dispatch system can read those reports and flag receivers whose phones were off or out of coverage, so the rider calls before setting off.
