SMS for farmers and agricultural cooperatives in Uganda
Most Ugandan farmers own a basic phone, and many are paid for coffee, milk or maize through mobile money. A text that confirms a delivery weight, the price paid and the MoMo transfer builds trust between a cooperative and its members. eSMS Africa sends those notices and seasonal advice in English and local languages.
What makes agriculture & cooperatives messaging different in Uganda
- Coffee is grown across central, eastern and south-western Uganda, and buyers and cooperatives pay smallholders after weighing their cherries or kiboko, often by mobile money.
- Dairy cooperatives in the south-west collect milk daily and pay members periodically, so a running record of litres delivered and payment due is valuable to each farmer.
- Under the Parish Development Model, launched in February 2022, households are organised at parish level, with farming enterprises at the centre of the programme.
- Two rainy seasons in much of the country mean two planting windows, so advisories need to arrive before planting, not after.
Messages agriculture & cooperatives teams in Uganda send
Delivery receipts
Send the farmer the weight or litres delivered, the grade and the price per kilo or litre at the collection point, so there is a record even before payment.
Payment confirmations
When the cooperative pays out, send each member the amount, the deliveries or period it covers and the mobile money reference, so they can check it against their own records.
Collection day reminders
Remind farmers of the next collection day or truck route, especially during peak harvest when buyers set schedules a week ahead and a missed truck means produce left unsold.
Seasonal advisories
Share planting, spraying or post-harvest handling advice from your agronomists at the right time in each of the two seasons, in the language members actually speak.
Input and loan notices
Tell members when subsidised seed or fertiliser arrives at the store, and remind input-loan borrowers exactly how much will be deducted from their next coffee or milk payment.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Receipts, payment notices and advisories to your own members are service messages. Selling inputs from a partner agro-dealer to the same list is commercial and needs consent and an opt-out.
- Farmer registers often include national ID numbers, land size and income. Under the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019, collect only what you need and do not share member lists with buyers or lenders without consent.
- Field staff may collect phone numbers on paper forms. Record consent on the form so you can show where each number came from if asked (UCC regulation 10(7)).
- Schedule bulk advisories for daytime; even non-commercial messages that arrive at night reduce trust.

Agriculture & cooperatives SMS in Uganda: common questions
Our farmers use basic phones. Will SMS reach them?
Yes. SMS works on every handset on MTN and Airtel without data, which is why cooperatives use it for receipts. Keep messages short, avoid links for farmers without smartphones, and include a phone number they can call. A field officer can then follow up with anyone who has questions.
Can we message in Lugisu, Runyankore or Luganda?
Yes, as long as someone fluent writes and checks the text. Ugandan languages use the Latin alphabet and fit the standard GSM character set, so each message can be up to 160 characters. Many cooperatives send the key figures in a local language with English names for amounts and dates.
How do we send each farmer their own figures?
Export deliveries or payouts from your records as a spreadsheet with columns for phone, name, quantity and amount. Upload it to the eSMS dashboard, write one template with merge fields, and every member receives their own figures in a single scheduled send that you can check in the reports afterwards.
