SMS for banks, microfinance banks and cooperatives in Nigeria
Nigerian customers judge a bank by how quickly the alert lands after a transfer, and cooperative members want proof that their monthly contribution was received. eSMS Africa sends debit and credit alerts, contribution receipts and loan reminders on the transactional route, so they reach members who have DND switched on, while savings promotions stay within the NCC category rules.
What makes banking & cooperatives messaging different in Nigeria
- From 1 May 2025 Nigerian banks began charging customers NGN 6 per SMS alert, up from NGN 4, after telecom tariffs rose (Brandcom). Customers notice every extra segment, so a short, single-segment alert is now a cost-control decision as well as a style choice.
- Staff cooperatives, thrift and credit societies and market-women's associations collect contributions by bank transfer, USSD and agent POS terminals run by firms such as Moniepoint and OPay. Members want a receipt that names the amount, the month and the running savings balance.
- Many subscribers have texted STOP to 2442 or blocked DND category 1 (banking, insurance and finance). Alerts, receipts and loan notices travel on the transactional route; new loan products, fixed-deposit offers and savings drives are promotions and will not reach those numbers.
- Cooperatives usually run monthly meetings and an annual general meeting with elections of officers, often in staff canteens, church halls or local government secretariats. A dated SMS with venue and agenda is the cheapest way to reach a quorum.
Messages banking & cooperatives teams in Nigeria send
Debit and credit alerts in one segment
Send masked account, amount, channel and balance the moment a transaction posts. Keeping each alert inside 160 GSM-7 characters avoids two-segment alerts that customers end up paying for twice.
Contribution receipts for cooperative members
When a member's transfer or USSD payment is reconciled, send the month, amount and new savings balance. Members stop calling the secretary to ask whether their payment arrived.
Loan instalment reminders
Schedule a reminder three days before the due date and another on the day, each with the instalment amount and the account or USSD string to pay into. Stop the sequence automatically once the payment posts.
AGM, election and dividend notices
Upload the member register from Excel and send the meeting date, venue and agenda, then a dividend notice after the accounts are approved. Use merge fields so each member sees their own share or dividend figure.
Account-change and fraud warnings
Alert customers when a phone number, email or BVN-linked detail changes on their profile, with a helpline to call if it was not them. These security notices are transactional and should never carry a promotion.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Banks and microfinance banks are licensed and supervised by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Cooperative societies are registered under cooperative law through their state cooperative department, so confirm which body your sender ID paperwork should come from.
- Debit and credit alerts, receipts and loan notices are transactional. Networks typically reject or reclassify transactional traffic that carries offers, so never add a promotion to an alert (this is operator practice rather than published NCC law).
- Savings and loan promotions fall under NCC partial DND category 1 (banking, insurance and finance). Anyone who blocked that category or sent STOP to 2442 will not receive them.
- Under section 36 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 a customer can object to direct marketing at any time. Record the objection and suppress the number across every sender ID you use.
- Never put a full account number, PIN, BVN or card number in an SMS. Mask the account and send people to the app or branch for full statements.

Banking & cooperatives SMS in Nigeria: common questions
Will debit alerts reach customers who sent STOP to 2442?
Alerts sent on the transactional route are not blocked by DND, because DND only filters promotional traffic. The alert sender ID must be approved for transactional use on each network and the content must stay purely transactional. A fact-check by Dubawa noted that some subscribers believe full STOP also blocks bank alerts, so if a customer reports missing alerts, check the delivery report first.
How can we keep alert costs down now that customers pay per alert?
Keep each alert to one GSM-7 segment of 160 characters: drop greetings, use short date formats, avoid emoji or curly quotes that force Unicode, and do not send two alerts for one transaction. App users who have push notifications can get push first, with SMS reserved for debits and security events.
Our cooperative is registered with the state, not CAC. Can we still get a sender ID?
Networks usually ask for a CAC certificate and a signed letter of authorisation. Send us your state registration certificate and a letter on your letterhead and we will ask each network whether it accepts them. You can send member notices on the eSMS default sender while the request is processed.
Can members check their balance by text?
Yes, with a two-way short code, which you can order online for Nigeria. Members text a keyword such as BAL, the message arrives at your webhook, and your system replies with the balance from your records. STOP replies on that number are recorded as opt-outs automatically.
