SMS for SACCOs, banks and microfinance in Kenya
Kenyan SACCO members expect a text the moment a deposit lands, a reminder before a loan instalment falls due and a notice when dividends are declared. eSMS Africa sends these alerts on a transactional sender ID across Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom, from your core banking system or a CSV upload, in English or Kiswahili.
What makes banking & saccos messaging different in Kenya
- Deposit-taking SACCOs are licensed and supervised by SASRA, while banks and microfinance banks answer to the Central Bank of Kenya. Members of both increasingly expect the same instant alerts they get from M-Pesa.
- Most SACCO members pay monthly contributions and loan instalments through a paybill with their member number as the account, or by check-off from salary. A confirmation SMS is often the only receipt they ever see.
- Dividend and interest-on-deposit announcements follow the annual general meeting, and members watch for them closely. A clear SMS with the rate, the payment date and the channel cuts down calls to the branch.
- Guarantor relationships are central to SACCO lending. Members who guarantee a loan want to know when their deposits are being held against it, and when that guarantee is released.
Messages banking & saccos teams in Kenya send
Deposit and contribution receipts
Trigger an SMS from your core system each time a paybill payment or check-off is posted, showing the amount, the new share or deposit balance and a reference the member can quote.
Loan instalment reminders
Send a reminder three days before the due date and a short notice on the day, with the exact amount and the paybill and account number, so members pay before penalties apply.
Guarantor notifications
Tell guarantors when a loan they guaranteed is approved, when the borrower falls into arrears, and when the loan is cleared and their deposits are released.
Dividend and AGM notices
Announce the AGM date and venue, then the declared dividend and interest rates once approved, and confirm when payouts have been credited to each member account.
Fraud and login alerts
Text a member immediately when a new device logs in to the mobile app or a withdrawal is requested, with a number to call if they did not make the request.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Deposit receipts, instalment reminders and guarantor notices are service messages and belong on a transactional sender ID. Product promotions such as a new loan offer need a separate promotional ID on Safaricom and an opt-out.
- If you run a digital lending product licensed by CBK, the Digital Credit Providers Regulations bar contacting a borrower's contacts or using shaming or threatening language to collect a debt. Keep arrears texts to the borrower and guarantors who agreed.
- Financial services is a sector where registration with the ODPC is mandatory regardless of size. Record your SMS provider as a data processor and keep a data-processing agreement on file.
- Do not put full account numbers or ID numbers in an SMS. Mask them to the last few digits and never include PINs or passwords.

Banking & SACCOs SMS in Kenya: common questions
Can our SACCO send loan reminders at night?
Instalment reminders are transactional, so Safaricom does not restrict their hours. Members still prefer a reasonable time, so most SACCOs schedule reminders for the morning. Promotional messages, such as a new loan product, are limited to 08:00 to 18:00 on Safaricom and need a promotional sender ID with an opt-out.
How do we send personalised balances to thousands of members?
Export members, amounts and due dates from your core system as CSV or Excel, upload them to the eSMS dashboard and use merge fields such as {{name}} and {{amount}}. Or call the bulk API with a recipients list. Each member receives their own figures in one send.
Can we text guarantors when a borrower defaults?
A guarantor has a legal relationship with the loan, so notifying them of arrears is generally part of the service. Contacting people in a borrower's phone book who are not guarantors is a different matter: for CBK-licensed digital lenders it is prohibited, and under the Data Protection Act it is risky for anyone.
Do we need two sender IDs?
On Safaricom one sender ID cannot carry both promotional and transactional traffic, so most SACCOs register a transactional ID for alerts and a second ID for marketing. If you never send promotions, one transactional ID is enough. eSMS Africa can submit both registrations together, and you can test on the eSMS default sender while they are approved.
