SMS for farmer cooperatives and agri-businesses in Rwanda

Rwandan cooperatives, coffee washing stations, tea factories and input suppliers reach farmers on basic phones, which makes SMS the dependable channel. Messages tend to follow the farming seasons: input orders before planting, collection days at harvest and payouts afterwards. This page shows the flows, sample messages and the rules that apply.

Rwanda context

What makes agriculture & cooperatives messaging different in Rwanda

  • Rwanda's farming calendar runs on seasons, with Season A planting from around September and Season B from around February. Input and planting reminders need to land a few weeks before each one.
  • The government's Smart Nkunganire System, built for the Rwanda Agriculture Board, lets farmers register for subsidised inputs by USSD on *774#. Many farmers already know that inputs are booked on a phone. eSMS Africa is not part of that programme.
  • Coffee and tea farmers deliver to washing stations and factories and are paid per kilogram, often by MoMo or through a SACCO. A payout SMS with the weight and price helps farmers check their earnings.
  • Kinyarwanda is the language most farmers read most easily. Short, simple wording and numbers in RWF work best on feature phones.
What to send

Messages agriculture & cooperatives teams in Rwanda send

Collection and delivery days

Tell members which day the cooperative truck collects in their village, or when the washing station opens for cherry. Send a reminder the evening before only if it is part of the agreed service.

Payouts per delivery

After weighing, send each farmer the weight, price per kilogram and total in RWF, then confirm when the MoMo payment is made. This builds trust in the scale.

Input order reminders

Before each season, remind members to order seed and fertiliser through the cooperative, with the deadline and the deposit amount. Name the season, for example Season A.

Extension tips and weather

Short agronomy tips from your field team, such as when to apply fertiliser, help members follow good practice. Keep each tip to one segment and schedule a series.

General assembly and dividends

Announce the cooperative's general assembly, the agenda and the dividend decision to every member at once, with the venue and date, and send a short reminder the day before so members in distant cells can plan the journey.

Rules that apply

Compliance for agriculture & cooperatives SMS in Rwanda

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.

  • Payout notices, collection days and meeting notices relate to an existing membership, which is within the Article 4 exclusions of the RURA regulation. Selling an input supplier's products to members is commercial.
  • If an agro-dealer or buyer wants to advertise to your members, get the members' consent first and send under the advertiser's own sender ID, with the source of the number and an opt-out.
  • Membership lists with national ID numbers, plot details and phone numbers are personal data under Law No 058/2021. Cooperatives that hold them should register with the NCSA.
  • Do not imply a link to government programmes such as Smart Nkunganire unless you are a registered participant. Farmers trust those names and misuse misleads them, which Article 8 of the RURA regulation prohibits.

FAQ

Agriculture & cooperatives SMS in Rwanda: common questions

Do SMS messages reach farmers on basic phones?

Yes. SMS works on any GSM handset, including feature phones without data. Kinyarwanda uses the Latin alphabet without special characters, so it fits the standard GSM character set and a message of up to 160 characters is billed as one part.

Can we send each farmer their own payout amount?

Yes. Export the weighing records as a CSV with each farmer's number, weight and total, then use a template with merge fields. Or have your payout system call the bulk API after each MoMo batch, so the SMS goes out only once the payment is confirmed.

Is this connected to Smart Nkunganire?

No. Smart Nkunganire is a government system for subsidised inputs, accessed on *774#. eSMS Africa is an independent SMS provider that cooperatives and agri-businesses use for their own member messages. Farmers should keep using official channels for subsidy registration, and your messages should not suggest otherwise.
