SMS for agro-dealers and farmer groups in Zambia
Zambian farmers already receive SMS during input season: under the e-voucher Farmer Input Support Programme, a text confirms their deposit and carries the voucher code they redeem at an agro-dealer. Agro-dealers, cooperatives and produce buyers can use the same channel for stock alerts, collection days and payments. This page covers those flows. eSMS Africa is not part of the government programme.
What makes agro-dealers & farmer groups messaging different in Zambia
- Under the e-voucher FISP, farmers deposit at a bank, get an SMS confirmation and voucher code, then redeem it at a registered agro-dealer. The World Bank says it grew from 17 districts in 2023/24 to all remaining districts in 2025/26.
- The World Bank reports that the programme was set to reach more than one million farmers in 2025/26, and that most redemptions happen between October and December, before planting.
- Planting follows the first rains from November, harvest runs from about April, and maize marketing peaks mid-year. Message calendars for dealers and buyers follow this rhythm.
- Farmer groups and cooperatives in Eastern, Southern and Central provinces often coordinate bulk input orders and produce aggregation, and members are spread across villages with patchy data coverage but working SMS.
Messages agro-dealers & farmer groups teams in Zambia send
Stock arrival and redemption reminders
Agro-dealers tell farmers when seed and fertiliser have arrived, which products are in stock and the opening hours, so farmers holding voucher codes do not make a wasted trip.
Cooperative input orders
Cooperatives confirm each member's order, the contribution due and the date inputs will be distributed at the depot, then remind members the day before so they arrange transport for the bags.
Collection and weighing days
Buyers and cooperatives announce produce collection days by village, with the meeting point, time and the moisture or grading standard expected, reducing rejected loads and wasted trips by farmers and trucks.
Payment confirmations
Confirm each payment to a farmer with the weight delivered, the price per kilogram and the amount sent to their Airtel Money or MTN MoMo wallet. Clear records reduce disputes.
Extension and weather tips
Send short, timely advice on fall armyworm scouting, top dressing or storage, written with an extension officer. Keep tips practical, seasonal and short, and avoid hard-selling products.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Do not imply any link with the Ministry of Agriculture or FISP unless you are an authorised participant. Never ask farmers to send their voucher code or PIN by SMS, and warn them about fraudsters who do.
- Stock, distribution and payment notices to customers and members are transactional. Product promotions to farmers are promotional and need prior consent, an opt-out and daytime timing.
- Farmer registers contain NRC numbers, locations and payment details. Treat them as personal data under the Data Protection Act No. 3 of 2021 and limit who can export them.
- Agronomic advice should come from qualified staff or extension officers. Pesticide recommendations should name only products registered for use in Zambia and follow the label.

Agro-dealers & farmer groups SMS in Zambia: common questions
Can eSMS Africa send FISP voucher codes?
No. Voucher codes are issued through the government programme and its own systems. eSMS Africa serves agro-dealers, cooperatives, buyers and NGOs that want to message their own customers and members. If you are an agro-dealer, tell farmers what you have in stock and remind them to keep their code private.
Many of our farmers use basic phones. Will SMS reach them?
Yes. SMS works on any GSM handset with no data bundle, and it reaches phones in areas where internet coverage is weak. Keep messages short and in plain language, and test them with a few lead farmers before sending to the whole group, so wording and timing suit them.
Can we send messages in Nyanja or Tonga?
Yes. SMS supports local languages written in the Latin alphabet, and messages without special characters stay in the standard 160-character segment. Have a fluent speaker write or check each template before it goes out, because a mistranslated input instruction can cause real losses.
