SMS for hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and HMOs in Nigeria
Missed clinic appointments and patients who never collect their lab results cost Nigerian hospitals time and money. eSMS Africa sends appointment, antenatal and immunisation reminders, result-ready notices and HMO authorisation updates, written so that no diagnosis or test name ever appears on a lock screen, and sent on the transactional route so DND does not stop them.
What makes hospitals, clinics & hmos messaging different in Nigeria
- Many Nigerians receive care through Health Maintenance Organisations under the National Health Insurance Authority, and enrollees often need an authorisation code before a specialist visit or procedure. A fast SMS with that code saves a queue at the front desk.
- Private hospitals, teaching hospitals and primary health centres all run outpatient clinics with fixed clinic days. Patients often travel far in cities such as Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt, so a reminder the evening before, with time and clinic, beats a generic notice.
- Antenatal care and childhood immunisation follow fixed schedules, which suits automated reminders tied to a due date. Messages should be readable on the basic feature phones still common outside the big cities.
- Health outreach messages, such as screening drives or new clinic services, are promotions in NCC DND category 4 (health). Appointment and result notices about a patient's own care are transactional.
Messages hospitals, clinics & hmos teams in Nigeria send
Appointment reminders
Send the clinic, date and time the evening before, with a number to call if the patient needs to reschedule. Free slots can then be offered to patients on the waiting list.
Results ready to collect
Tell the patient that results are ready and where to collect them or log in, without naming the test. Results themselves stay in the hospital portal or with the doctor.
Antenatal and immunisation schedules
Enrol mothers at booking and send reminders for each antenatal visit, then each scheduled vaccine for the baby. Use a two-way short code so mothers can confirm attendance or ask to rebook.
HMO authorisation codes
When an HMO approves a referral or procedure, send the enrollee and the provider the authorisation code, its validity and the approved facility, so treatment starts without phone calls.
Pharmacy refill alerts
Remind patients on long-term medication when a refill is due and tell them when an ordered item has arrived. Keep the drug name out of the text where it would reveal a condition.

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.
- Health data is sensitive personal data under the NDPA 2023. Keep diagnoses, test names and drug names out of SMS text, because messages appear on lock screens and shared family phones.
- Appointment, result-ready and authorisation messages about a patient's own care are transactional. Outreach, screening drives and new services are promotions in NCC DND category 4 (health).
- Hospitals and HMOs that process health data should check their obligations, including any registration or audit filing, with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
- If you advertise medicines or health products by SMS, check the advertising rules of NAFDAC and the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria before the campaign runs.

Hospitals, clinics & HMOs SMS in Nigeria: common questions
Can we send lab results by SMS?
Avoid it. A result in an SMS can be read by anyone holding the phone and is stored in network logs. Send a result-ready notice that names no test, and deliver the result itself through a patient portal, the clinic or the doctor.
Will appointment reminders reach patients on DND?
Yes. Appointment reminders are transactional and travel on the transactional route, which DND does not filter. Blocking category 4 (health) only stops health promotions, such as a screening campaign or an advert for a new clinic. Keep reminders free of those promotional lines so networks do not reclassify them.
Can patients confirm or cancel by text?
With a two-way short code, available to order online for Nigeria, patients can reply YES or NO and the reply reaches your system by webhook, where it can free the slot automatically. On a one-way alphanumeric sender ID they cannot reply, so give a phone number instead.
