Use cases · Nigeria SMS use cases in Nigeria
In Nigeria the route matters as much as the message: OTPs and alerts must travel on the transactional route to reach DND numbers, while promotions must respect the NCC 2442 Do-Not-Disturb choices. Choose your industry to see sample messages, the NCC, NDPA and sector rules that apply, and how to send with the eSMS Africa API.

What every sender in Nigeria should know
- The NCC Do-Not-Disturb service lets subscribers text STOP to 2442 to block all promotional messages, or choose partial DND by category (banking, real estate, education, health, consumer goods, tourism, sports, religion and more).
- Promotional SMS does not reach numbers on DND. OTPs, alerts and other transactional messages are sent on a separate transactional (corporate) route that operators restrict to non-promotional content.
- The Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 gives people the right to object to direct marketing at any time, and processing for marketing must stop once they object.
- Sender IDs are approved per network (MTN, Airtel, Glo, T2) and operators apply sending windows to promotional traffic.
Sender IDs in Nigeria
- Alphanumeric sender IDs (up to 11 characters) are approved by each network. Networks usually ask for the CAC certificate and a letter of authorisation.
- Use separate sender IDs for transactional and promotional traffic so OTPs are not caught by DND filtering.
- eSMS Africa manages the approvals; see the Nigeria sender ID page for fees and timelines.

Can I send SMS to DND numbers in Nigeria?
Transactional messages such as OTPs, debit alerts and delivery notices can reach DND numbers on the transactional route. Promotional messages cannot reach subscribers who opted out with STOP or the matching partial-DND category.
What is partial DND?
Subscribers can block promotions by category instead of all at once, for example banking, education, health, religion or sports. A promotion in a blocked category will not be delivered to them.
Can I pay in naira?
