A Nigerian school SMS plan works best when it follows the school calendar: fee reminders before each resumption, PTA and event notices mid-term, and exam-season updates timed to JAMB, WAEC and NECO announcements. Fee, resumption and safety messages to parents of enrolled pupils are transactional and reach DND numbers; admission adverts and open days are promotions in NCC DND category 3 (education).

This playbook gives a term-by-term schedule, ready-to-use templates and the rules that decide whether a parent actually receives the message.

Why SMS still matters for Nigerian schools

Most schools already have a parents' WhatsApp group. SMS does a different job:

  • It reaches every parent number on the register, including parents on basic phones or without data.
  • It cannot be replied to by 400 parents at once, so important notices are not buried.
  • It carries the school's registered sender name, which makes fake "pay to this new account" messages easier to spot.
  • Delivery reports show which parents did not receive a notice, so the office can call them.

The term calendar playbook

Most Nigerian schools run three terms, with dates set by the school or the state ministry. Adjust the weeks below to your own calendar.

Exam seasons: JAMB, WAEC and NECO

JAMB UTME

JAMB released the first batch of 2026 UTME results on 17 April 2026, and candidates could check by sending UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number used at registration, as reported by Channels TV. Expect a flood of parent questions in results week. A short SMS from the school explaining the official checking method saves the front office hours, and steers families away from "result upgrade" scams, which JAMB warned against.

WAEC and NECO

WAEC's WASSCE and NECO's SSCE for school candidates fall in the third term for SS3 students. Dates are published by each examination body, so link to the official timetable rather than retyping it. Useful messages in this period: mock exam dates, practical days, exam-day arrival times, and the date results are expected, always pointing to the examination body's own website.

Rules for exam-season messages

  • Never imitate JAMB, WAEC or NECO sender names or short codes.
  • Do not promise result dates before the examination body announces them.
  • Keep candidate numbers and scores out of SMS unless the parent has asked for them on the registered number.

Templates you can copy

Each template fits a single 160-character segment when the merge fields are typical lengths. Replace the brand with your registered sender name.

  • Fee reminder: "Bright Future College: Dear parent, {{child}} ({{class}}) has a fees balance of NGN {{amount}}. Resumption is {{date}}. Pay by transfer to {{acct}}."
  • Receipt: "Bright Future College: We received NGN {{amount}} for {{child}}, 2nd term fees, on {{date}}. Thank you."
  • Absence alert: "Bright Future College: {{child}} was absent today. Please call the school office on {{phone}} if this is unexpected."
  • JAMB guidance: "Bright Future College: JAMB UTME results are out. Candidates can text UTMERESULT to 55019 from the phone used for registration."
  • Early closure: "Bright Future College: School closes at 12 noon today due to flooding on the access road. Please arrange pickup."

Keep the tone polite and consistent, and always sign off with the school name so parents recognise it even when the sender ID is shown differently on older handsets. Avoid emoji and curly quotes in templates. They switch the message to Unicode, which allows only 70 characters per segment and can double the cost of a send.

How to send: from bursary spreadsheet to parents

  1. Export the parent list from Excel or your school management software with columns for parent phone, child, class and balance.
  2. Import it in the eSMS dashboard and map the columns to merge fields.
  3. Write the message with {{child}} and {{amount}} placeholders, preview several rows and check the segment count.
  4. Schedule the send for a sensible daytime hour, and use campaign approvals so the bursar or principal signs off before it goes.
  5. After sending, filter the delivery report for failed numbers and ask class teachers to update them.

Developers can do the same with the bulk API. See the SMS API Nigeria page and the API docs.

DND and data protection

Parents who sent STOP to 2442, or blocked category 3 (education), will not receive promotional school messages. That matters for admissions marketing aimed at prospective parents. Messages to parents of enrolled pupils about fees, dates and safety are service messages and can go on the transactional route, provided they carry no advertising. Our DND guide covers the categories in detail.

Pupil names, classes and fee balances are personal data under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. Send only to the parent or guardian on record, limit who can export the list, and remove numbers when a pupil leaves the school.

Universities, polytechnics and colleges of education

Tertiary institutions send to students rather than parents, and their calendar is driven by admissions and registration rather than terms. Typical messages include post-UTME screening dates and venues, admission list releases, acceptance fee and registration deadlines, matriculation and convocation logistics, and examination timetable changes. Students change numbers more often than parents, so ask them to confirm their number at each registration and watch delivery reports for numbers that fail.

Departments and hostels often want their own lists. Use team roles in the dashboard so a faculty officer can send to their students without seeing the whole institution's database.

Safety and emergency messages

Schools in flood-prone areas or near busy roads sometimes need to close early or change pickup arrangements at short notice. Keep an approved emergency template ready, make sure at least two staff can send it, and test it once a term. Emergency notices are transactional, so they reach parents on DND. Keep them short, state exactly what parents should do, and follow up with a second message when the situation is resolved.

What it costs

SMS is priced per segment, from NGN 9.1 ($0.0068) on the basic tier, with no monthly fee. A school can estimate a term's spend by multiplying parent numbers by the planned messages per term. Larger school groups can compare the business tier at NGN 7.5 on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Do school fee reminders reach parents on DND?

Yes, when they are pure service messages about an enrolled child sent on the transactional route. Add an advert for a summer camp and the message becomes promotional, and DND parents will not receive it.

Can parents reply to school SMS?

Not to a one-way sender name. If you want replies, such as RSVPs for a PTA meeting, use a two-way short code; see two-way SMS.

Should we use the school name as sender ID?

Yes. Register a short form of the school name (up to 11 characters) with each network. eSMS Africa handles the approvals; the sender ID guide lists what is needed.

How early should we send fee reminders?

Two weeks before resumption gives parents time to arrange a transfer, with a second reminder three days before. More than two reminders per term tends to annoy parents.
