Bulk SMS for churches and events in Kenya

Kenyan congregations give through M-Pesa, gather for harambees and keep in touch through home fellowships, and SMS links all of it. eSMS Africa helps churches send service reminders, thank members for their giving with a receipt and announce events in Kiswahili and English, to members who agreed to hear from the church.

Kenya context

What makes churches & events messaging different in Kenya

  • Many churches receive tithes and offerings by M-Pesa paybill, using account names such as TITHE, OFFERING or BUILDING. Members appreciate a thank-you receipt from the church itself.
  • Harambees, building projects and missions fundraising are announced weeks ahead, with a contribution target and a paybill account dedicated to the drive.
  • A membership list reveals a person's religious belief, which the Data Protection Act classes as sensitive personal data. That makes consent and careful handling more important than for an ordinary contact list.
  • Religious institutions are treated as non-profit data controllers for ODPC registration, with their own fee category, separate from commercial businesses and charities that trade.
What to send

Messages churches & events teams in Kenya send

Service and meeting reminders

Remind members of Sunday services, midweek prayers, youth meetings and choir practice, including any change of time or venue. Short weekly reminders keep attendance steady without overwhelming members.

Giving receipts

Connect your paybill to the eSMS API and thank each giver with the amount and the account, such as tithe or building fund. It helps members keep their own records.

Harambee and fundraising updates

Announce the harambee date, the target and the paybill account, then share progress and thank contributors after the event. Clear reporting on totals raised builds trust for the next drive.

Home fellowship and cell groups

Let group leaders send meeting details to their own members using saved groups in the dashboard, without sharing the full church list. The church office keeps control of who can send.

Weddings, funerals and conferences

Notify members of funeral arrangements, wedding committees and conference registration, and send tickets or seat codes for larger events. Families can share funeral details quickly with the whole congregation.

Rules that apply

Compliance for churches & events SMS in Kenya

A practical summary with sources, not legal advice. Check the regulator's current text for edge cases.

  • Membership data reveals religious belief, which is sensitive personal data. Collect numbers with clear consent, for example on a membership or visitor card that mentions SMS, and keep the list access-controlled.
  • Churches register with the ODPC as non-profit or religious data controllers. Check your registration and name your SMS provider as a processor.
  • Service reminders and giving receipts to members are service messages. Adverts for a paid concert or a church business venture look promotional; add an opt-out and send in daytime hours.
  • Do not message people who gave once at a funeral or wedding harambee as if they were members. Ask them before adding them to regular lists.

FAQ

Churches & events SMS in Kenya: common questions

Can we send our members a receipt for every M-Pesa offering?

Yes. Safaricom's Daraja API sends your server a confirmation for each paybill payment. Match it to the member using the account reference or your records, then call the eSMS API with a short thank-you receipt. Smaller churches can upload the paybill statement weekly instead.

Do church announcements need an opt-out?

Reminders and receipts to members who joined the list are service messages, but giving members an easy way to stop is good practice and builds trust. For anything that promotes paid events or products, include an opt-out. Members who stop receiving texts should still be welcome at church; record the request and move on.

Can cell group leaders send messages without seeing every member's number?

Yes. Create groups in the eSMS dashboard and give leaders a team role limited to their group. Campaign approvals let the church office review messages before they go out. This keeps the church's voice consistent and protects members' numbers from being copied or misused.
