When Twilio may suit you better

  • You send to many regions outside Africa and want one global vendor.
  • You need Twilio's wider product set in the same account, such as programmable voice, video or a contact-centre platform.
  • Your team is already deeply integrated with Twilio tooling and helper libraries.

When eSMS Africa is the better fit

  • Most of your traffic goes to African numbers and per-message cost matters.
  • You want two-way short codes in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda or Zambia.
  • You want to top up with mobile money or see prices in local currency.
  • You want sender ID registration handled for you, network by network.
Switching

Moving SMS traffic from Twilio to eSMS Africa

  1. 1

    Map the request

Twilio's Messages resource takes To, From and Body. The eSMS send endpoint takes to, sender_id and text as JSON with a Bearer API key. Most migrations are a single function swap.

  2. 2

    Re-register sender IDs

Sender IDs are registered per provider with each network, and Safaricom allows an ID with only one provider at a time. Start registration with us before you switch traffic.

  3. 3

    Move webhooks

Point delivery-report and inbound webhooks to your existing handlers and map our statuses (submitted, sent, delivered, failed) to yours.

  4. 4

    Run both in parallel

Send a share of traffic per country through eSMS first, compare delivery reports, then move the rest.

FAQ

eSMS Africa vs Twilio: questions

Is eSMS Africa cheaper than Twilio for Kenya?

On published list prices checked on 27 October 2026, Twilio showed $0.3134 per outbound segment to Kenya. Our live Basic rate for Kenya is shown in the table on this page. Prices change, so compare both pricing pages on the day you decide.

Can I keep Twilio for some countries and use eSMS Africa for Africa?

Yes. Many teams route by country code: African numbers to eSMS Africa, everything else to their existing provider. Our API is a single HTTPS endpoint, so adding it alongside another provider is straightforward.

Do I need new sender IDs?

Usually yes. Networks register a sender ID against the provider that submits it. We handle the registration with each network and you can test on our default sender meanwhile.
