Agro-dealers and farmer groups in Zambia can use SMS to tell farmers when inputs are in stock, when cooperative orders are ready, when produce will be collected and when payment has been sent. Farmers already know the format: under the e-voucher Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP), a text confirms their deposit and carries the voucher code they redeem at a registered agro-dealer. This guide covers the season-by-season messages that work, with templates you can adapt.

Why SMS fits Zambian agriculture

Many farmers use basic phones and live where mobile data is patchy, but SMS reaches any GSM handset. It is also a channel farmers have learned to trust during input season. According to the World Bank, the e-voucher FISP started in 17 districts in 2023/24, reached 74 districts in 2024/25 and was extended to all remaining districts in 2025/26, with more than one million farmers expected to take part.

The same World Bank feature describes the flow: farmers make a small deposit at a bank, the Ministry of Agriculture confirms it by text and creates a voucher code, and farmers use the code to buy inputs from registered agro-dealers. It also reports that more than half of farmers had redeemed by the end of October 2024 and 97% by the end of December 2024. That October to December window is when agro-dealers are busiest and when good stock messages matter most.

Important: eSMS Africa is not part of FISP and does not send voucher codes. This article is for agro-dealers, cooperatives, buyers and NGOs messaging their own customers and members.

Messages for agro-dealers

Farmers holding voucher codes often travel a long way to a shop. A stock message saves a wasted trip and brings them to you rather than the next dealer.

Stock arrival

Chipata Agro Supplies: D-compound and SC maize seed now in stock. Bring your e-voucher code and NRC. Open Mon-Sat 07:00-17:00.

Queue and opening hours

Chipata Agro Supplies: Extra counter open this Sat 06:30-18:00 for e-voucher redemptions. Short queues before 09:00.

Fraud warning

Chipata Agro Supplies: We will never ask for your voucher code or PIN by phone or SMS. Only give it at our counter.

Keep stock messages factual and do not imply that you speak for the Ministry or the programme. Only redemption-eligible products should be described as such.

Messages for cooperatives and farmer groups

Cooperatives coordinate bulk orders and aggregate produce. Members are spread across villages, so SMS replaces rounds of phone calls by lead farmers.

  • Order confirmation: "Tisamale Co-op: Your order of 4 bags fertiliser and 1 bag seed is recorded. Balance ZMW {{amount}} due by 30 Sep via Airtel Money, ref {{memberno}}."
  • Distribution day: "Tisamale Co-op: Inputs ready. Collect at Msoro depot Thu 13 Nov from 08:00. Bring member card."
  • Meeting notice: "Tisamale Co-op: Members meeting Sat 10:00 at the school. Agenda: marketing plan and new members."

Messages for produce buyers and aggregators

At harvest, buyers need farmers at the right place with the right quality. Payment confirmations build the trust that brings farmers back next year.

  • Collection day: "Lundazi Grain Buyers: Collection at Chasefu market Tue 08:00. Bring dry, clean maize, moisture below the agreed level. Bags provided."
  • Payment: "Lundazi Grain Buyers: Received 1,250 kg from you on 02/06. ZMW {{amount}} sent to your MTN MoMo, ref {{ref}}."

Mobile money payments with an SMS receipt that shows weight, price and amount reduce disputes far more than a paper slip that gets lost.

Extension tips that farmers act on

Short advice at the right moment can be useful, but only if it is accurate and local. Work with an extension officer or agronomist, keep each tip to one action, and send it when the action is due.

  • Scout maize for fall armyworm every few days in the early weeks after emergence.
  • Apply top dressing at the recommended stage for the variety, not all at once.
  • Dry grain properly before storage to limit losses.

Never recommend a pesticide that is not registered for use in Zambia, and always point to the label.

Languages

English works for most dealer and cooperative messages, and many farmers prefer it for numbers and dates. Where your members mainly use Nyanja, Bemba, Tonga or Lozi, you can send in those languages, since they use the Latin alphabet and fit in a standard SMS segment. Have a fluent speaker write each template; a mistranslated input instruction can cost a harvest.

Practical setup

  1. Build your list from your own records: customer registers, cooperative member lists, buyer contracts. Note how each number was collected.
  2. Register your business name as a sender ID (see sender ID registration in Zambia) so farmers recognise you.
  3. Import the list from Excel with columns for village, crop or member number, so you can target messages.
  4. Schedule messages for early morning or late afternoon, when farmers are near their phones.
  5. Top up with Airtel Money or MTN MoMo. Messages to Zambian numbers start from ZMW 0.2101 each ($0.0104), live on our pricing page.

Compliance points for agriculture

  • Farmer data, including NRC numbers, locations and wallet numbers, is personal data under the Data Protection Act No. 3 of 2021. Limit who can export it.
  • Promotions need consent, an opt-out and daytime timing, following the 2011 ZICTA directive as a safe default.
  • Do not use the names or logos of government programmes in your sender ID or messages unless you are authorised.

Measuring what works

Agricultural messaging is seasonal, so you get only a few chances a year to learn. Keep a simple record of each campaign and compare it with what happened at the counter or the depot.

  • Delivery rate by area. Delivery reports show which numbers failed. A cluster of failures in one camp or village usually means old numbers that need updating through lead farmers.
  • Footfall after a stock message. Note redemptions or sales on the days after a stock alert compared with days without one.
  • Turnout at distribution and collection days. If attendance is low, try sending the reminder earlier, or a second reminder the evening before.
  • Disputes about payment. Count queries before and after you start sending payment confirmations with weight and price.

Small changes such as timing and wording often matter more than sending more messages.

Frequently asked questions

Can eSMS Africa send FISP e-voucher codes?

No. Voucher codes and deposit confirmations come from the government programme's own systems. eSMS Africa is for agro-dealers, cooperatives, buyers and NGOs messaging their own customers and members.

Will SMS reach farmers with basic phones?

Yes. SMS works on any GSM handset without a data bundle and reaches areas where internet coverage is weak. Keep messages short and test with a few lead farmers first.

How can a cooperative pay farmers and confirm by SMS?

Pay through mobile money as usual, then send each farmer a message from your list with the weight, price and amount using merge fields. One upload sends every farmer their own figures.

Can farmers reply to our messages?

Only with a two-way number. You can order a two-way short code in Zambia so farmers can reply, for example to confirm attendance. Otherwise include a phone number in the message.
